Diesel Locomotive Modeling Techniques, Vol. One: SW1500

Diesel Locomotive Modeling Techniques Vol. One is a deep dive into the practice of prototype modeling, written by one of the most accomplished craftsman of the form: Tony Sissons.

In creating models that are replicas of a specific full-size locomotive, Tony brings a blend of artistry and engineering to each build and the results are stunning. In Volume One, he tackles a project we can all relate to: rebuilding a dummy loco purchased for silly money at a train show.

Over the course of 96 pages and more than one hundred photos, you’ll watch this “bargain” loco come to back to life as ex-Conrail #2216. In the process, you’ll learn how Tony evaluates the model, researches the prototype and plans the work to be done. It’s like watching over his shoulder as he decides what the model needs to meet his standards.

As the build progresses, you’ll follow Tony’s thinking on whether to use a commercial part or scratch build a better one. You’ll discover how small details like a scale width coupler pocket or the air supply line to the horn makes a big impact on the finished model.

Each chapter is a mini-tutorial on the different aspects of detailing a locomotive, so even if you aren’t interested in a Conrail SW or don’t work in HO, there is value in learning Tony’s techniques and applying them to your own model building. Do you want to improve the grille work on a model, or detail the pilot areas? Tony covers both. In the chapter on weathering techniques, he candidly shares his mistakes and the lessons learned from them. It’s a discussion that’s rare and long overdue.

This is not a generic book aimed at beginners. The author assumes that readers have basic modeling skills such as the ability to drill accurate holes, solder metals and can measure and layout parts in styrene and brass. With that said, he understands that not everyone has a shop full of advanced tools, so everything covered in this volume is done with basic hand tools and home made jigs.

Such thoughtful material deserves a high quality package and this book features a heavier weight cover and interior paper stock. The matte finish pages helps reduce glare while still offering sharp photo reproduction and crisp text. The book layout is open and uncluttered, and makes for a relaxed, lean back reading experience. In the ebook edition, the high resolution photos (150dpi) let you zoom in and really see each detail.

The ebook is here and may I also suggest The Missing Conversation Volume 04 for an in-depth interview with Tony.

Diesel Locomotive Modeling Techniques, Vol. One is available now in both print and digital formats only from OST Publications.
